About North Sydney Remedial & Sports Massage

North Sydney Remedial & Sports Massage was developed by Shaan Gresser, a Sydney based movement and manual therapist.

After a rewarding career as an environmental scientist, I expanded my biological expertise into the human realm. My passion for human movement and function and the intimate role it serves in our daily lives inspired my return to study and extend my capacity and knowledge to include remedial and sports massage therapy. For many years as a qualified Australian canoeing & kayak instructor I have helped individuals achieve their personal and fitness goals and now I enjoy applying the combined experiences of both fields.

Stillness In Motion..

North Sydney Remedial & Sports Massage is part of the Stillness in Motion Group.  My Stillness in Motion experience offers Remedial & Sports massage, Kahuna Bodywork and Sea kayak coaching and guiding!

My Philosophy

My approach is to apply the art of therapeutic touch to engage you in your own self-healing by expanding and refining your proprioceptive sense and options for movement.

Through my bodywork and coaching experiences I have come to understand the many benefits of increasing our body sense and the role it plays in every aspect of our lives – whether you’re training for a high level sporting event, coping with the strain of an office environment or recovering from injury.

I strongly believe that the essence of healing lies in an ability to listen, observe, and to perceive beyond the ability to apply technique. Applying good technique is one aspect of a great massage, knowing what your body needs to reach your goal is what provides long-term value to any massage treatment.  I apply a manual release therapy by intuitively blending deep tissue, myofascial, trigger point, and active release techniques to restore movement and energy in your body.

Remedial & Deep tissue Massage

The term remedial refers to variety of western techniques applied for a specific therapeutic effect that will enhance optimal function for the whole body. The aim is to facilitate the healing process, which begins at the cellular level aiding soft tissues in repairing and restoring functional integrity.

Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Therapy

The word ‘myofascia’ captures the bundled together, inseparable nature of muscle tissue (myo-) and its accompanying web of connective tissue (fascia). Myofascia is the tough, fibrous connective tissue glue that holds us together. It spider webs throughout our body, forming organ cavities, membranes, coverings for our bones, muscle and circulatory system. It makes up ligament, tendon and scar tissue. Myofascia is made up of elastin, collagen, and a liquid component called ground substance. Elastin provides a degree of pliability to the system. Collagen gives this tissue its strength. A core aspect of fascia is that it has been found to be highly innervated and contain specialised mechanoreceptors. This means fascia is a vital source of proprioceptive feedback for the central nervous system which enables healthy movement of your body.
Possible the most important aspect for you to know about myofascia is that it creates the continuous functional landscape of your body and because of this any tension or strain experienced anywhere in the body is distributed via this connective web. This explains why any postural compensation, either due to injury or life-style, can impact other areas of the body.  If this change or bind in the myofascia is not recognised and treated this can remain and cause disfunction in the body possibly for years. This is why in any work that we do with our clients we have a whole-body approach to treatment.

Trigger points are fibrous nodules within taut bands of tissue that are painful and give rise to a predictable pattern of pain when compressed (Travell and Simons, 1998). Trigger points can be the root cause of a multitude of chronic pain complaints and it is not uncommon for anyone to have some present in their bodies.  The location, how long they have been there and cause will dictate the problems they can cause.  Myofascial and trigger point release is essentially a manual therapy that uses sustained pressure into the myofascial tissue of the body to restore function and motion and eliminate pain.

Reviews

“I had been a long time massage avoider, I often (almost always) felt worse after receiving a massage – tired, sore, lifeless sometimes. I knew the benefits and was an advocate but previous experiences had left me believing massage was not for me. Recently, a desire to experience Kahuna motivated me to search for a local therapist. When I found Shaan, I encouraged myself to have no expectations and wow! This was hands down the best massage I had received to date and the results have continued in subsequent visits. The combination Shaan uses is unique and very effective, I believe that even without a word about my current state, Shaan will offer exactly what is needed. Her bodywork techniques are deeply nourishing and honouring to the body, mind and soul.”

“Shaan brings 2 very important things to the massage table: an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology and an amazing presence. You can feel that her single intention when she is with you is to make you feel better.
To achieve this, she blends massage styles, use her hands, elbows, forearms, and always leave you feeling relaxed and energised from head to toe. She truly cares for her clients.”

“Shaan’s massages are amazing, I can’t rate them highly enough!”

“Shaan is by far the best remedial therapist I have ever encountered in 15 years of regular treatments; her knowledge, skill and genuine care are unequalled. I often experience acute pain in my neck, which causes severe headaches, she always expertly identifies the cause and relieves the pain. I consider myself lucky to have found someone of her immense skill and experience. I highly recommend her.”I had a fantastic massage .Being a personal trainer I understand the body and what needs to be done but have struggled to find someone that is so in touch with what the body is doing. Absolutely sensational .”
