Deep Tissue / Sports Massage

Deep Tissue or Sports Massage is one form of massage therapies which focuses on reaching and stimulating deeper layers of muscles and the fascia (“the connective tissue surrounding muscles, bones and joints”). Deep Tissue or Sports Massage is utilized to treat with injuries, dysfunctions and chronic ache and pain of soft tissues such as stiff neck, tension of shoulders, lower back pain and leg muscles tightness.

Adhesions (“bands of painful, rigid tissue”) sometimes occur in soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. Occasionally adhesions can hinder blood flows, cause pain, decrease range of motion (ROM) and even bring about inflammation, especially in the case of chronic muscle tension or injury. The deeper pressure is very effective to break down these adhesions, relieve pain and recover normal muscular movement.

Benefits of Deep Tissue or Sports Massage are described below:

  • Loosen up muscles, tendons and ligaments
  • Make muscles more flexible and relaxed
  • Ease the tension of soft tissues
  • Decrease muscular pain, spasm and stiffness
  • Break down adhesions in the fascia
  • Increase range of motion (ROM) of joints
  • Identify and exclude possible risky conditions in the soft tissues
  • Decrease the chance of injury
  • Help to heal and recovery from injury
  • Remodel collagen to make scar stronger and more flexible after injury
  • Increase blood circulation and bring more oxygen and nutrients to damaged cells
  • Promote vascular and lymphatic flows and flush out the metabolic body wastes
  • Decrease stress and increase the sense of relaxing and well-being, etc.

Various massage techniques are applied during Deep Tissue or Sports Massage. The qualified remedial massage therapist fully understands anatomy, physiology, pathology and the structure and function of human body and then combines basic deep Swedish Massage techniques with Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Techniques (Trigger-point Release), Muscle Energy Technique (MET), PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching, Thermotherapy and/or Lymphatic Facilitation. The massage flow and strokes are slower and the pressure is much deeper. Deep Tissue or Sports Massage can be carried out with or without massage oil or lotion.

Deep Tissue or Sports Massage is conducted in any stage of below:

  • Maintenance and Restorative Massage (massage therapy during training)
  • Treatment and Rehabilitation Massage
  • Relaxation and well-being
  • Event Massage (pre, intra and post)

One of possible side effects of Deep Tissue or Sports Massage is muscle soreness after the massage therapy. However, it is supposed to diminish in a few days.
There are also some tips to improve the benefits of the massage therapy:
Drink tepid water or herb tea right after the treatment to flush out toxins which are released from soft tissues. It is also good to rehydrate your body which can promote reducing muscle soreness after the treatment.
Not to try furious exercises after the treatment
Stretch your whole body to prevent muscle aches and pain after the treatment

This is one of the best massage therapy when you are experiencing muscular tension, tightness and spasm, chronic ache and pain, sports injuries or decreased range of motion (ROM) to alleviate your symptoms.

Through the gentle touch, various strokes and firm pressure of warm heated and smooth oil coated stones, usually Basalt (or Lava Rocks), you can experience that the heat from the stones is transmitted into your body and then deeply passed through your muscles. Besides, your muscle ache, pain and tension is eased and then extreme relaxation is created during and after the treatment. The remedial massage therapist might put heated stones on the specific areas such as beside your spine, on your belly or in your hands in order to ameliorate circulation and even energy flows of your whole body.
