About Thai Massage
Who needs traditional Thai massage?
There is a trend in our busy lives towards over-indulgence and ignoring messages from our body to take time out. This will, unfortunately, lead to certain physical and mental imbalances. What traditional Thai massage addresses is the restoration of wholeness, balance, health and happiness.
In Thai medical theory the body’s vital life energy flows along channels called Sen. You may have heard the Chinese refer to this similar energy flow as “Qi” (pronounced Ki). This energy powers all physical, mental and emotional processes. An imbalance or blockage in the flow of Sen will cause pain and eventually disease. When your Sen is flowing freely and energy distribution is balanced, you feel happy, relaxed, energetic and free from stiffness and pain.
Here in the western world stiffness and loss of flexibility is regarded as an inevitable part of the aging process. however this shouldn’t be the case. Thai massage and manipulation techniques will bring a youthfulness back to your body. How you feel – physically, mentally and emotionally – is more important than your mere physical age.
The origins of Thai Massage
The history of traditional Thai massage is somewhat obscure and was influenced by both the Chinese and the Indians. Nuat phaen boran or, the ancient-manner massage as it is known in Thailand, is often credited to the Buddha’s very own physician over 2,500 years ago- Jivaka Kumar Bhacca. Also known as Shiuago Komparaj he is seen as the ‘Father of Thai Medicine’. Everything from this era was handed down verbally until eventually recorded in stone around 1832 at Wat Pho, the largest temple in Thailand.
Wat Pho is the national centre for the teaching and preservation of traditional Thai Massage, and is where our therapists have trained extensively. With Buddhist philosophy deep at the core of Thai massage it has traditionally been seen as a religious rite. Up until recently Thai massage was only officially practiced by Buddhist monks. It was, however, often practiced as a form of folk massage within the home of ordinary Thai’s as well.
We bring this proud history of Thai Massage to our practice, and look forward to providing the many health benefits it has to offer to our clients
